Chapter Six

Rez heard Avery get up and get dressed. He knew it was early in the morning as well. When you lived and died by the sun, you tended to get very good at what time of day it was. He could tell his mate was trying to be quiet, but he was as noisy as someone eating chips in a quiet movie theater. He’d know. Rez had spent a lot of time at the midnight showings when he was a teenager.

Avery opened the bedroom door and then closed it just as fast, but not before a burst of light had filled the room. Rez hissed and threw the covers over his head. He still felt the heat on his face with just that small exposure.

Older vampires could tolerate the early morning sun. Rez couldn’t. At the age of twenty-four, he was still considered a babe in his world—something he’d always hated, a fact Ceri had constantly reminded him of. Nicolina had been right. It was surprising that Ceri had let him leave.

“Just make it quick,” Rez said, his voice groggy with sleep. “I’ll be fine.”

“Are you sure? I don’t want to turn you into my crispy fried mate.” There was pure panic in Avery’s voice. Rez liked that his mate worried about hurting him.

“I’m sure, but don’t leave the house. I can’t help you while the sun is still out.” Rez tossed the covers aside and moved until he was across the room, his chest pressed into his mate’s back. “Promise me you won’t leave.”

The little cat shifter relaxed against him, and Rez felt the need to take him once more. Last night had only whet his appetite. He wanted more. He ran his hands up and down Avery’s smooth arms while kissing the side of his neck. It seemed he couldn’t stop touching the man.

Avery sighed. “I have to go to work.”

Rez’s grip tightened on Avery’s arms, not enough to hurt, but enough to let the man know he wasn’t the least bit pleased. “You can’t leave the house.”

Avery yanked free, and Rez watched as his mate felt along the walls until he found the light switch. They both blinked rapidly when he turned the lights on. Although it wasn’t a high wattage bulb, it still had him blinking.

“Wait a minute,” Avery said as he finally stopping blinking. “My mate is going to respect what I want to do, how I want to do it. Go get me a bear to wrestle.”

Rez stared at Avery as if he’d lost his mind. Had the man hit his head while getting dressed? He shook his head as he furrowed his brows. “What?”

Avery gave a low growl, as if frustrated that Rez wasn’t following his crazy line of thought. “I didn’t almost blow up for you to hold me prisoner.”

“You’re not making any sense.”

“I’m making perfect sense,” Avery argued. “You think I’m going to trade one rope for another?”

What fucking rope?

“Will you speak English?” Rez demanded. A headache began to pulse behind one eye.
